Yay! We Did It!

Today Taylor took a small step towards a HUGE goal. She went potty in the toilet! We are so proud of her. Granted, being completely potty trained is probably a while away, but any step in the right direction is great progress.

I have been doing some research on the web on potty training autistic children. The advice is all the same, and it’s the same thing you’d tell someone who was training a non~autistic child. Most of my research says that most autistic children usually won’t train until they are between 4 and 6 (although it varies with every child). Taylor seems to learn well with repetition, so that’s the approach we will take with her. We are going to start out slow, so as no to force her, and ease into this new experience.

I think she’s really starting to become ready. She’s having less wet diapers and showing interest in the potty itself. (Plus she makes a real serious face when she’s going in her diaper…it’s too cute). Believe me, it will be a challenge, especially since she does not talk. I don’t know how she’ll be able to tell me she’s got to go…we’ll figure it out, I guess.

Wish us Luck!!
